On Wednesday, 12 November 2025, over 4,000 people gathered at the African Flower Hotel grounds in the Moshi District of the Kilimanjaro Region to celebrate a historic milestone: the completion of 20 years of Floresta Tanzania’s work. The grand graduation event, themed “TUMEHITIMU: JUKUMU LA KUTUNZA MAZINGIRA LIENDELEE!” (We Have Graduated: The Responsibility to Protect the Environment Continues!), brought together government officials, religious leaders, and community members. This ceremony officially marked the conclusion of Floresta’s programs in the district, celebrating two decades of partnership and growth.

The atmosphere was filled with joyful celebrations, featuring traditional music and vibrant dances that reflected the local culture and the pride of the participants. These festivities honored the deep-rooted achievements reached since the program began.

During the ceremony, the District Commissioner of Moshi, serving as the Guest of Honor, delivered a significant address. While he acknowledged that this event signaled the end of Floresta’s formal presence in the district, he strongly emphasized the importance of sustainability. He reminded the audience that the foundation for success has been firmly established, and it is now the vital responsibility of the community to continue the environmental and economic progress started by the organization.
In recognition of their dedication, the event included a special session to honor those who were central to the program’s success. The Village serving and association groups and partner institutions were formally acknowledged for their outstanding stewardship and were awarded certificates of appreciation. This gesture emphasized the critical role that local leadership and collaboration played in achieving the project’s long-term goals.

The impact of Floresta’s work is visible in both the local economy and the natural landscape. Over the past twenty years, the organization helped form 95 Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA), allowing 2,550 members to save a total of TZS 4 billion and issue loans worth TZS 2.6 billion. This financial foundation empowered 85% of members to start their own businesses, creating lasting stability for thousands of families. Furthermore, the environment has been restored through the planting of 200,000 trees every year. This consistent effort has protected water sources, reduced soil erosion and made local farms more resilient to climate change. These achievements were supported by strong collaborations with 100 schools and 77 religious institutions, ensuring that the values of conservation and entrepreneurship were instilled in both the youth and the wider community.

During the event’s product exhibitions, farmers shared testimonies of success, noting that sustainable farming training led to 80% of them achieving higher yields and improved nutrition.

Although Floresta Tanzania has now officially graduated from Moshi District, the message of the day was clear; the mission lives on through the people. The community is now well-prepared to nurture the land and protect the prosperity of future generations.
