Since 2013, Floresta Tanzania has partnered with Samaki Maini Primary School, a government school in Siha District, Kilimanjaro Region, to instill values of environmental conservation and sustainable living in the young generation. Through this collaboration, students have gained both theoretical lessons and practical training in sustainable practices.

To make learning practical, a Farmer Field School (FFS) was established within the school compound, allowing pupils to experiment various environmental conservation technologies including organic agriculture. A vegetable garden was created and is maintained by the students, providing practical experience in sustainable farming while strengthening their understanding of conservation practices

The school’s vegetable garden has become more than a learning tool. It provides a reliable source of nutritious meals, with harvests of spinach, amaranth, carrots and other vegetables incorporated into daily meals. These fresh foods improve dietary diversity, boost immunity, support growth and sharpen cognitive development among the pupils.

Beyond nutrition, the garden serves as a living classroom. Students acquire agricultural skills, embrace healthy eating habits and transfer this knowledge to their families and communities. The Farmer Field School has therefore enriched the school community with both conservation knowledge and tangible nutritional benefits.

Samaki Maini Primary School is just one of 341 schools across Tanzania partnering with Floresta. Through these partnerships, Floresta Tanzania is shaping environments where children grow healthier, learn better and embrace sustainable living.
